Did you know?

An electric oven uses one kilowatt-hour of electricity in about 20 minutes, but one kilowatt-hour will power a TV for 3 hours, run a 100-watt bulb for 12 hours, and keep an electric clock ticking for 3 months.

 RS232 Connector EndThis is basic example on how to send and receive one character over AVR UART peripheral. It is easy to understand and if you have not worked with UART on microcontroller before, it is good starting point. In article AVR serial port UART register usage we have explained details of register usage. Here we will give one example in order to see complete project and test this on your microcontroller.

To create a new project, use AVR project wizard as described in AVR Input/Output pin project example, using next settings:

Or simply download complete Codevision project with source code below.
Download complete source code.

We can divide UART related program lines in few sections:

Initialization:

// USART initialization
// Communication Parameters: 8 Data, 1 Stop, No Parity
// USART Receiver: On
// USART Transmitter: On
// USART Mode: Asynchronous
// USART Baud Rate: 9600
UCSRA=0x00;
UCSRB=0x98;
UCSRC=0x86;
UBRRH=0x00;
UBRRL=0x33;
// Global enable interrupts
#asm("sei")

UART Interrupt service rutine:

interrupt [USART_RXC] void usart_rx_isr(void)
{
char status,data;
status=UCSRA;
data=UDR;
if ((status & (FRAMING_ERROR | PARITY_ERROR | DATA_OVERRUN))==0)
   {
   rx_buffer[rx_wr_index]=data;
   if (++rx_wr_index == RX_BUFFER_SIZE) rx_wr_index=0;
   if (++rx_counter == RX_BUFFER_SIZE)
      {
      rx_counter=0;
      rx_buffer_overflow=1;
      };
   };
}

Here we pickup received character, check if data has error bit flag active and if not, data is placed in circular buffer for later processing. This is a good solution because more time is available for Receive buffer processing function to take data from buffer so data does not get lost. Still, if this happens due to slow processing, rx_buffer_overflow variable will be set to 1.

Function that retrieves one character from receive circular buffer:

char getchar(void)
{
char data;
while (rx_counter==0);
data=rx_buffer[rx_rd_index];
if (++rx_rd_index == RX_BUFFER_SIZE) rx_rd_index=0;
#asm("cli")
--rx_counter;
#asm("sei")
return data;
}

This function is used in main function in part of the code provided below

      my_variable=getchar();
      putchar(my_variable+1);
      puts("TEST ");

This code takes whatever it receives and sends it back incremented by one and followed by word “TEST “.
Here is a snapshot of this example usage on com port terminal - development tool.

terminal

As previously explained, every character received is sent back incremented by one and followed by word test.

This is a simple example but with minor modifications it can be used to make more complex command recognition by AVR microcontroller on UART.

And below is given complete main code with important code lines highlighted. These lines are ones that will give you understanding of what is processing data flow of the code.
